What Is a CEREC Dental Crown?
CEREC technology has been evolving for over 30 years. Rather than take a traditional impression and have a dental laboratory make a crown based on that, CEREC uses a digital video camera to take thousands of images, knits them together to form a virtual model of your mouth on the computer, then (under our direction) designs and creates your custom made and custom fitted crown, generally in 2 hours or less. Being in control of the design of the crown allows us to minimize the amount of adjustment needed to seat the crown and make sure it fits into your bite. It also allows us to create the ideal contours in between your teeth to minimize areas where you might otherwise end up with food impaction. There is no need for a second appointment or temporary crown. The pressed ceramic that is used is the same material used by dental laboratories. CEREC also gives us the option of using a ceramic composite hybrid to provide a restoration with properties and longevity approaching traditional ceramics but at a lower cost. This gives our office an option that is stronger and longer lasting than a large filling but not as expensive as a crown in situations where cost is of primary concern or where the extra strength or longevity of ceramic is not required. We began using CEREC technology in 1999, and have been using the current version of the technology for 7 years with excellent results. While it is not for every situation, we are able to use CEREC to create the large majority of crowns in our office.
